Many people will be posting the "things I'm thankful for" lists this year. I, too was tempted to make such a list.
But in keeping with my tradition to do nothing right, I decided to list the things I wasn't thankful for instead.
So I looked around and saw the bounty of plenty (yes, that's redundant) of opportunity and gadgetry and poultry and harmony and a billion other words that end in -y that are made accessible in our American lifestyle. And for a brief moment I thought that I may not be able to complete this task.
Then I turned on the TV.
Ah, I found it. I found the one thing I have absolutely no gratitude for.
Ingratitude.
Almost every channel I turned to was littered with attempts to make us ungrateful for all the things that we have access to. Our cars, traditions, relationships, football teams...well, just about everything was no longer good enough.
Not once was I beckoned to be thankful for what I have. Or cherish that which I have worked hard to obtain. It was all about looking downcast on what I have and finding ways to get new everything.
Ingratitude is the root of consumerism. Consumerism is tough taskmaster. Don't you find it odd that the largest shopping day of the year is placed right after the day of thanks?
Now that I have bummed you out please let me remind you that you have the power to choose to be grateful. Not just on a special Thursday every November but everyday of every year. So I suppose that's one more thing I'm thankful for - the power to be thankful.
