Have you ever noticed that as an technological advance - like the iPod or the cellular phone - make giant a giant dent on the the way people live they coincidentally become taken for granted and become no longer deemed a luxury but fade into a necessity ultimately to become and afterthought.
As things get bigger they get much smaller.
Have you ever noticed the longer a superstar athlete, politician, activist, inventor lives and acts in the limelight they eventually become the target of ridicule and, in some cases, are completely turned on and vilified by some of their most loyal followers. Once they could do no wrong. Now they've sold out and can do no right.
As people get bigger they get much smaller.
Have you ever noticed that God was once the most important and influential voice in your life. You were overwhelmed by his presence. He was somehow your friend, father, counselor, Lord, caretaker, judge, and lover all at the same time, all perfectly in balance, all just what you needed just as you needed it.
Now the influence isn't as strong as it once was. You were once overwhelmed, now just a bit complacent. You've settled in with your concept of who God is and you're comfortable.
As God got bigger He also got smaller.
But how can an infinite God ever get smaller? Not to directly compare the two but its the same reason that the iPod is slumping in sales. People started dictating what they want out of a relationship and if they are not satisfied they turned their attention somewhere else. An iPod could only play music and I need internet access. Hello iPhone. And while these attitudes drive business models and make rising stars wax and wane with popularity it does nothing but hinder our relationship with God.
We get this strange idea that we've tapped into God for everything that we ever needed and now we must turn our attention to others stuff to fill the desires of life. The timeless One can no longer satisfy us in the moment. So we squeeze Him down to make him fit in our schedules - usually between 10:00 - 12:00 on Sunday mornings.
God isn't an iPod or Britney Spears. He's not Barack Obama or a 3D TV. He's God. First and Last. Beginning and End. There is no shadow of turning in Him. He's the One who Is, who Was, and who Is To Come. He's bigger and wiser and lovelier than anything else and He deserves that I keep him very large. Very larger indeed.
