The ER

The ER is the closest to a battle ground that most of us civilians will ever face. It is here that we face our biggest enemies: pain, anxiety, fear, and the unknown.

Surrounded by more strangers than friends or family there always seems present the temptation to give in to the lie that you are alone.

And the noises. Oh the cacophony of beeps and buzzers. It's enough to question your own sanity.

But all the external foes pale in comparison to the battle raging on the inside. "what's wrong with me?" "why am I in so much pain?" are among the normal questions you ask yourself all the while not knowing what news is going to come back to you after being prodded and poked.

These are great moments to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus. If you can learn to more deeply trust him in this environment you can learn to trust in countless other areas of life. The usual response to pain is to seek cure and if you can't get a cure then a distraction will do. But what we all could use in these situations is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Jesus can be that friend.
